Triple insulation glass is a development that has spread from the Scandinavian countries via Germany and Austria, where triple insulation glass is already the standard. The trend towards even more energy efficient and zero-on-the-meter 'homes makes triple insulation glass indispensable, over and above double insulation glass as an insulating element. The window is made up of three panes of glass with two spacers, usually made of aluminum - yet more and more also in an even more insulating "Warm edge" variant. These are connected air-tight with each other at certain optimized distances from each other, so that two insulating spaces between the glass plates are formed. Therein included is an insulating gas, such as Argon or Krypton. Triple glazing is unofficial/popularly sometimes called HR +++ glass.

The insulation for triple insulation glass is expressed in a U_g-value, the lower the better. The unit (W/m²K), indicates how much heat per square meter and per degree temperature difference between the two sides of the insulation glass is lost. By default, this insulation value is determined in the centre of the insulation glass for a vertical installation. A placement other than vertical results in a different insulation value. In addition, the solar factor (SF) and the light transmission (LT) are factors that dictate the choice for a type of triple insulation glass.
